250 WORD REFLECTION | ZOSEN X MINA HAMADA

Zosen and Mina Hamada are a pair of artists from Argentina and Japan who collaborate to create amazing, coloured works. Their works often appear as street art and feature bold, bright colours and shapes. A girl in my hometown, Toowoomba, started up a street art festival three years ago and it has completely transformed our town. We saw developments not just in a visual sense, but we began to see more traffic through our streets as they became an attraction. I have always loved street art and its ability to give neglected areas a new life but I had never truly appreciated its role until it impacted me directly. This notion of giving forgotten areas a new life is embodied in Zosen and Mina’s work as they completely transform the space they work in. The works are usually on dilapidated walls of warehouses and alleyways and the rich colours and textures paired with the irregular shapes and forms create an amazing narrative.

I thought their work was really appropriate this week as we have been looking at colour composition and different shapes to create our A2 colour works. Their artwork always contains a variety of colours and forms but all the elements work harmoniously, tying into Zosen and Mina’s goal of “emanate[ing] good vibes and energy through [their] work that [their] audience will embrace with open arms” (Figuerola, 2014, para. 2). This is something that I aspire to in my own work.
